Our CSR initiatives focuses on community based investment programmes and sponsorships. Our management and staff engage themselves with these community projects through voluntary service; as a result a continuous commitment towards CSR initiatives are seen and demonstrated across the company. Etisalat carries out a range of CSR initiatives which range from both medium-to-long and short-term projects, namely Education, Community/Livelihood Development, Environment and Disaster Relief.
This Vesak, Etisalat Lanka along with the Non governmental organization SOMS Inc (So Others May See) hosted a unique Vesak dansala themed “Bringing hope, bringing sight” to provide over 3000 pairs of spectacles to financially challenged Sri Lankans, unable to afford the services of an optometrist and lenses. The free eye screening by optometrists and the free spectacle give away was carried out from 24th to the 26th of May, 2013 at the Etisalat Flagship Store premises on Galle Road. The company selected this central location as Galle Road sees thousands of visitors from all corners of the country arriving to witness the Vesak celebrations in Colombo. At its conclusion 3000 visually challenged people saw the world clearer thanks to Etisalat and SOMS.
OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) Project - Contributing towards improving the literacy and IT skills of children in rural schools
This project was developed to enhance computer literacy among children in rural schools. Fify five students at Kukulkatuwa Vidyalaya, Nochchiyagama, were the fortunate recipients of these free laptops. All students up to Grade 5 received laptops which have been uploaded with their current syllabus. The laptops were handover to the kids by some of the key official who were present at the occasion. Also present was Etisalat's Chief Sales Officer Mr. Sanjeewa Samarasinghe and Senior Manager K M Abeysinghe and many others from the region.
A project launched to recycle Marketing waste. The objective was not only to recycling marketing waste but also an opportunity to uplift the lives of rural housewife's.
With Etisalat's throw away marketing materials, provided the opportunity for rural house wives to turn out handy environmentally friendly grocery bags. These bags will be produced by these rural village housewives, in turn giving them a source of income to uplift their quality of living. The bags are sold at a nominal price and part of the income is reimbursed to the housewives. Currently eight women are occupied as employees
Etisalat's vision of enabling students the access to knowledge came to light through the substantial donation of a fully equipped library and education equipment including a large volume of books, TV, DVD player and a projector. Etisalat's CSR drive was to provide opportunities for students to 'access today's world through education'. This initiative selected some of the most deserving and deprived schools to set up Etisalat's Knowledge Centre. Most of the reading materials available are relevant to the student's everyday academic lessons, thereby aiding them with the proper required knowledge to be well informed in these respective areas. Six Etisalat Knowledge Centres were set up across the country.
A CSR sponsorship of a musical show called "Tharu dilena rayak" which was performed by disabled War Heroes. The proceeds of the show were donated to the building of cottages in Anuradhapura for these disable War Heroes to live in. With the sponsorship of the show, Etisalat also donated Rs. 3.5 Million to build one cottage. This cottage called the abimansala was built up in Anuradhapura
As part of Etisalat's ongoing CSR activities, the most recent campaign reached out to provide assistance to flood victims, through disaster management centres. The campaign selected 4 badly affected districts, namely Anuradhapura, Pollonnaruwa, Badulla and Akkaraipaththu, donating aid and dry rations to help them overcome the devastation caused by the floods. A total of 2000 parcels containing essentials worth 1000 Rupees each, such as sugar, tea, milk powder, dhal, rice, salmon, tooth pastes and tooth brushes were distributed to 2000 families in the districts, giving them a chance to eat healthily and strive for a better life.
Etisalat informed and involved customers in this noble cause, who contributed a total of Rs. 361,220.00 through confirmed contribution via SMS. Etisalat added a further Rs. 1,638,780.00 enabling the success of the project. Teams from Etisalat together with district disaster management coordinators personally visited the homes of the families and delivered the parcels. They were warmly received by all the families in all 4 districts.
